A peek into Australian Esports

[WCG Qualifiers, MC Internet Cafe, Melbourne]

Before I entered ‘MC Internet Cafe’, I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. Scattered groups of teenage guys crowded around rows of brightly lit monitors, some cheering, some yelling and others transfixed with the events on screen. Today though, today was going to be different. Teams of men in their early to late twenties sporting matching uniforms with their on screen names printed on the back. Talks of whether ‘flanking hard left while the ‘mages’ (magic units) support from the right’ was a viable option based on the replays of their opponents they had no doubt spent hours analysing.

Teams were engaged on the other side of the dimly lit, second floor room. No cries of jovial laughter or friendly trash talk. Focused eyes and concerned stares from observers was the closest thing to emotion coming from these players.

Their match finishes, an epic 35 minute struggle ends with ‘Victory’ flashing on screen. The uniformed team sits back in their chairs with sighs of relief. They turn to one another and congratulate each other on their hard earned victory. Their opponents, lacking a uniform but definitely not dedication don’t seem too concerned about their loss at all.

Heavy Rain’s Deleted Scenes

Remember Heavy Rain? Guy loses his son, gets all mopey, gets electrocuted? Well, Quantic Dream has released a little back story and explanation to some of the games ambiguous lose ends.

Explanation of Ethans blackouts and Shelbys relationship with his mother are fleshed out a little. Obviously there’s gigantic spoilers in there. So if you haven’t played Heavy Rain, go do that, then come back here.

Heavy Rain was a really special game to me. Hopefully it’s not overshadowed or forgotten when game of the year awards roll around next month.

Fable III T-Shirts Are Still Terrible

It’s not easy to pull off a video game shirt, let alone with some of the designs that have just come out of the Lionhead in the lead up to Fable III. In all fairness, there are a few good ones in there but ‘obey or die’ isn’t going to charm any fellow chicken chasers anytime soon.

Link to the gallery is here. I’ll wait until a few more subtle shirts come out before I give my NES controller shirt a wardrobe friend.

After a rocky launch, Bethesda and Obsidian have patched a few issues players have been having particularly on PC and with downloading pre-order bonuses on consoles.

EA Acquires Angry Birds Publisher Chillingo

Today EA has announced that they have acquired iPhone publisher Chillingo. With this comes quite a large library of games but notably comes the iPhone juggernaut ‘Angry Birds’

“EA is committed to preserving Chillingo’s independence enabling them to manage and cultivate their great network of relationships to deliver the optimal gaming experience for consumers.”

A port of Angry Birds wouldn’t be bad on XBLA and PSN. Personally, a name change to EAngry Birds would be amazing.

Day [9] Donate Day

If you play (or have played) Starcraft, Brood war or Starcraft II  and haven’t heard of Day [9] you’re a terrible person and I hate you. Here is a link to the plethora of content he produces for the SCII community every.single.day.  It takes a ton of dedication and guts to put yourself out there on the internet, let alone put a face behind your content.

Pulling over 11,000 viewers for his ‘Fun day Monday’ cast there is definitely a large following of internet nerds who can’t get enough of his cleaver thinking and humor behind the game.

Some people over at reddit have decided that it’s time that we give back to Sean Day [9] Plott by organizing a mass donation for his 200th episode.Being a college/university student myself I know how hard it can be living week to week on rent. Anything we give will count.

Here’s the link to his donations page so get down there and put in a dollar or two. The internet is a great source of free content but this kind of commitment shouldn’t go unnoticed.

So when do we donate? There are a few complications as to when we should donate which are a little confusing on the Reddit article so I’m going to do my best to summarize.

-Mlg is interfeering

-He doesn’t want to postpone funday Monday for next week.

So, if we could all try to mass-synchronize-donate on the 10/21/10 for the real 200th daily that would be fantastic!

If you don’t get all teary watching the “My life of Starcraft” daily, you have no soul.
